Baumschulenweg
On Berlin’s Spree riverbank, this home embraces raw fair-faced lightweight concrete. SB5IVE carried out subtle repairs and applied hydrophobic and anti-graffiti protection while preserving the natural texture.

Right on the banks of the Spree in Berlin’s east stands the home designed by architect Tanja Lincke – surrounded by nature, ruins and industrial buildings. The fair-faced lightweight concrete walls were intentionally left in a raw state to blend seamlessly with the industrial character of the site.
This natural, untreated look allows the individual building sections to come together harmoniously without any additional refinement. As a result, SB5ÜNF’s work focused mainly on minor repairs, such as touch-ups at anchor points and reprofiling small areas of damage. Because the natural textures of the concrete were to be preserved, the challenge was to find a suitable coating that would maintain the material’s authentic appearance while protecting the surfaces from weathering and environmental impacts.
Using a combination of hydrophobic treatment and an anti-graffiti system, 80 m² of surface were coated and protected, ensuring the natural expression of the concrete remains undisturbed by dirt or damage over time.
For us, listening to what our clients want is essential. For one project, that might mean an extensive restoration and an upgrade of the concrete finish; for another, it could simply be about protecting the existing surfaces. It’s never about pushing our own agenda, but about working together to find the right solution – one that keeps the concrete looking its best for the individual project for years to come.
