Stuttgart 21
Stuttgart 21’s chalice-shaped concrete columns demonstrate the expressive power of exposed concrete. SB5IVE developed a concept for joint repair, colour correction, and the adjustment of tie holes.

The chalice-shaped columns of the Stuttgart station are an impressive example of what exposed concrete is capable of achieving. This long-term project is currently in an exciting phase and is scheduled for completion in mid-2026.
Even with a precise planning phase as in this case, faults and irregularities occurred in the concrete chalices. This demonstrates that careful post-treatment cannot be avoided, even under the best conditions. In 2017, we were commissioned to develop a sample concept for the refurbishment of the joints, color correction, and the comprehensive adjustment of the tie holes.
However, we were not awarded the contract in the Europe-wide tender process.
