Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus
For the listed Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, SB5IVE restored façades, interior surfaces and ceiling ‘volcanoes’. Old coatings were removed, textures recreated, and protection applied to preserve the original character.

DÜSSELDORF SCHAUSPIELHAUS The ensemble theater “D’haus” is located at the heart of Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and that is precisely what it represents: the center of theatrical arts in western Germany.
Built from 1965-1969, it was the renovations from 2016 to 2021 that made the Schauspielhaus shine in its full splendor. The project included the refurbishment of the roof, the façade, and public areas. The architectural firm ingenhoven architects, who oversaw the renovation of the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, were also involved in the green-covered KÖ-Bogen II.
SB5ÜNF was one of only a few companies invited to tender and produce sample works, as we have sufficient manpower to carry out such a lengthy and demanding project to the highest standards. Our many years of experience working with listed buildings and protected surfaces, along with numerous references, made us the ideal partner. Our ability to combine the treatment of high-quality exposed concrete surfaces with concrete restoration provided the perfect foundation for the project.
From June 2019 to July 2021, we were responsible for the restoration of the façades, selected interior surfaces, and the ceiling “volcanoes” of the Schauspielhaus. As the ensemble is a protected heritage, one of our key tasks was to preserve and restore the original substance and character of the surfaces. This required the highest level of precision both in the smallest details and in large-scale work.
During earlier renovation works, the exterior façade with its exposed board-formed concrete had been completely painted over, obscuring its original character. Our task was to restore this original appearance and, in areas where new smooth-formwork concrete had been added, to create a concrete imitation on the exterior. To achieve this, all old coatings (paint, etc.) had to be removed and the surfaces cleared of any paint residues and impurities. In order to ensure a homogeneous overall appearance, the respective areas were artistically and conservatively treated and carefully integrated. To finish our work we applied protective coatings, preserving the quality for many years to come. We are proud to have finished such a demanding project, achieving the architects vision.
